How to choose the right web designer?

Updated: May 30, 2020

So here you are, wanting a website. This means you have already come a long way. You are ready to take the next step. When you already know that you want to create a website, and you don’t have the time and skills necessarily to do it yourself, how do choose the right website designer?

Other than some practical notes, which you can find at the end of this article, it is important to know that you cannot make mistakes — if you keep being honest to what you feel during the process.

We all know about going back and forth in decision making and finally regretting it. Or when we bought the cheapest or the most exciting thing, but later we notice we don’t use it or don’t enjoy it. When you choose from the mind, you will start doubting your choices and feel regret. If you make a decision without the quiet affirmation of deep relaxation in your body, your mind has all the space to bring in doubt.

The good news is, that life brings us the people and situations that inspire us to act in the first place. We don’t have to do anything for that! Our bodies will tell us to go left or right. All that is required, is to quiet the noise of your mind. If a decision feels good and brings complete relaxation in your body, it is usually a good decision to go with. Or it is at least a decision you can easily course correct a bit later.

You can’t go wrong if you make a (small) decision, move ahead and trust that you will be guided when you need to adjust. During every step of the process, you can use your body signals to adjust and make the necessary choices. There is learning in every step of the way.

A small little checklist when working with a web designer.

1. Get in contact with your potential web developer and make sure you can see and hear each other (in person or through a video call) It is important to feel a connection with the one who will build your website. Do you feel trust in their skills as well as who they are as a person?

2. Communicate about what is important for you What goal do you have with your website and what values are important for you? What feeling do you want to communicate with your website?

3. Bring up any doubts and other feelings Take time to pause and be quiet so you can feel what happens in your body. Communicate any doubt or tension that comes up. This creates transparency for both of you.

4. Ask for a price indication if you have a tight budget Every web designer spends time to create a proposal. If you already know you have a maximum budget, make this clear during the conversation, so you won’t waste each other’s time.

5. Trust your instinct When you know, you know. Take the next step. If you make a choice with your gut rather than your mind, you will always make the right decision for that moment — without regrets or doubts.
